The suggestions below are offered from my own experience as well as that of others. As with everything in life, there are many personal opinions about the various methods for stitching and caring for needlework, and the stitcher must decide for themselves what works best for them.

Quilted Pillow Finishing

"Christmas Remembrances" © shows one way to finish a design as a quilted pillow.

Supplies:
1/4 yard Christmas print fabric (more if finishing a large design)
Water soluble sewing marker
4 buttons of your choice (model uses star shaped buttons)
Polyfil & matching thread

Step One: measure and mark a 1-1/4" border (or desired amount for border) around all four sides of design and trim off excess edges of linen.
Step Two: Cut 2 strips of Christmas print fabric, each 2-1/4" wide. The length will be determined by the measurement of the top and bottom of your design.
Step Three: Place fabric strips, right sides together, across top and bottom edges of stitched design. Line up edges and pin in place. Stitch together with a 1/4" seam. Iron seams toward strip.
Step Four: Cut 2 strips of Christmas print fabric, each 2-1/4" wide. The length will be determined by the measurement of the sides of your design.
Step Five: Place fabric strips, right sides together, along each side of stitched design. Line up edges and pin in place. Stitch together with a 1/4 " seam. Iron seams toward strip.
Step Six: Cut 1 square of Christmas print fabric to the same size as your quilted design. This will be the backing for the mini-pillow.
Step Seven: Place quilted, stitched design, right sides together, with Christmas print backing. Line up edges and pin in place.
Step Eight: Stitch around outer edges in a 1/4" seam, leaving a 3" opening along one edge for turning right side out.
Step Nine: Trim corners and turn mini-pillow right side out. Iron flat by placing stitched design face down on a towel to protect stitching.
Step Ten: Pin front and back of mini-pillow together along inner seam where design meets fabric strips. Following close to inner seam, top stitch front and back together, leaving a 3" opening along inner edge directly across from opening left in outer edge seam. Top stitch around outer edge 1/4" from outer edge.
Step Eleven: Fill inner section of mini-pillow with polyfil. Top stitch both openings closed.
Step Twelve: Optional - You may attach a ribbon hanger if you would like to hang your mini-pillow as a front-door decoration, Christmas ornament, or wall decoration. Cut an 8" length of 1/4" or 1/2" ribbon or cord. Fold in half and knot raw edges. Center and hand stitch (or attach with glue gun) ribbon/cord along top inner seam of quilting strip.
Step Thirteen: Optional - Hand-stitch (or attach with glue gun) color-coordinated craft buttons to each of the 4 corners of the mini-pillow. These may be found in packages in fabric/craft stores. They come in many shapes and colors. Choose what buttons look best with the fabric you've chosen to finish your mini-pillow with. The model uses colored star-shaped plastic craft buttons.
