Supplies
Needed:
1/4 yard each of 3 coordinating fabrics
scrap piece of quilt batting
water-soluble sewing marker
Sewing thread to match fabrics
4 craft buttons of your choice to match fabrics
Wooden dowel, bell-pull, or smooth tree branch in size
to fit quilted design
Step 1: Border
Measure a 1-1/2" border around completed,
stitched design. Mark border with a water-soluble sewing
marker. Trim off excess fabric along border line.
Step 2: Preparation
Overcast all edges of fabric with sewing machine, serger,
or by hand.
Step 3: Cutting Squares for Top &
Bottom
Cut squares size 1-3/4" x 1-3/4" from each
of 3 coordinating fabrics. The number you will need
will depend on the size of your stitched design.
Step 4: Assembling Squares
Sew 2 strips of squares together with 1/4" seams
until they are the same width as the top and bottom
edge of your design. Sew squares in the following order:
Fabric 1, 2, 3; Fabric 1, 2, 3; Fabric 1, 2, 3
Iron all seams in one direction.
Step 5: Quilting Top & Bottom
Place 1 strip across the top of finished design, right
sides together. Sew with a 1/4 inch seam. Repeat with
2nd strip across the bottom of finished design. Trim
excess if quilted strip is longer than top and bottom.
Iron seams toward strips.
Step 6: Assembling Squares
Repeat directions for assembling squares for top and
bottom until they are the same length as the sides of
your stitched design.
Step 7: Quilting Sides
Place 1 strip across one side of finished design, right
sides together and sew with a 1/4" seam. Repeat
with 2nd strip across other side of finished design.
Trim excess if quilted strip is longer than side. Iron
seams toward strips.
Step 8: Backing
Choose 1 of your coordinating fabrics to use as the
backing for the quilted design. Measure width &
height of quilted design and cut 1 backing piece.
Step 9: Batting
Cut 1 piece of quilt batting in same size as backing.

Step
10: Cutting Tabs
Cut 8 strips (You may only need 6 strips if design is
small) of coordinating fabric to match backing, each 1-3/4"
wide x 7-1/2" long.
Step 11: Making Pointed Tabs
On 1 end of each strip, measure 1" up on both sides
and mark. Next, measuring across the bottom edge of the
same end of strip, mark the center. Use a ruler and place
it on an angle from the 1" measurement to the center
mark and draw equal diagonal lines to form the point.
Trim each strip along these lines.
Step 12: Assembling Tabs
Place strips in sets of 2, right sides together, and sew
a 1/4" seam down 1 long side, along pointed end,
and up other side. Do not sew top of strip. Trim points
and edges and turn right side out. Repeat for the other
3 strips. Iron flat.
Step 13: Placement of Tabs
Place the straight, raw edges of each of the 4 strips
equally across the right side of the top edge of the quilted
design. Pin in place and baste 1/8" from edge.
Step 14: Assembling Backing
Layer pieces in this order:
1. Quilted design, right side up, with tabs laying flat
down.
2. Place backing piece on top of quilted design, right
sides together.
3. Place batting on top of backing piece, wrong sides
together.
Pin all layers together, being sure tabs are tucked inside
so you don't catch their ends when sewing seams. Leave
an opening of about 3 - 4" along one edge of quilted
design.
Step 15: Sewing Backing
Being sure tabs are tucked inside, sew a 1/4" seam
around all 4 edges of quilted design, being sure to leave
the 3 - 4" opening unstitched.
Step 16: Turn & Press
Trim corners and turn the quilted design right sides out.
Iron flat - be sure to place a clean cloth or towel between
iron and stitched design.
Step 17: Securing Tabs
Fold tabs over top of quilted design toward front. Use
a coordinating button to stitch each tab in place.
Step 18: Hand-Stitch Opening
Hand-stitch the opening closed.
Design is now ready to hang on a wooden dowel, bell-pull,
or a nice smooth tree branch.
Enjoy!
