Supplies
List
--
Bellpull of your choice.
-- Scrap of quilt batting
-- Scrap of fusible webbing
-- Purchasing linen/evenweave - You will need twice
the width of your bellpull, plus 1 inch for back seam.
For example, if your bellpull is 6 inches wide, then
you will need a width of 13 inches (6 + 6 + 1 = 13)
to finish.
-- Purchase a length that allows you your desired amount
of space above and below design, plus 4 inches. For
example, if you want to have a 2 inch margin of fabric
above and below design, then calculate as follows:
Design Size Height + 2" top margin + 2" bottom
margin + 4" for finishing ends in a casing for
bellpull
Floss needed for braiding:
2 skeins each of 3 coordinating colors (6 skeins in
all).
To
Begin Stitching Design:
Overcast
all edges. Center design on purchased linen/ evenweave
as usual. Note that you will have extra-wide margins
all around for finishing.
Press:
Stitch
design. Press, using a thick towel and placing stitched
design, face down, and another pressing cloth on top.
A clean, cloth baby diaper or a smooth, clean dish towel
works well. Follow these pressing instructions whenever
ironing your stitched design.
Preparing
design for Bellpull:
Fold
stitched design in half lengthwise with right sides
together and stitch sides together in a ½"
seam, either by hand or machine. Iron the seam flat.
Seam
will run down the center back of fabric. . Your fabric
will now be shaped like a 'tube' with both ends open.
Lay flat & measure the width of fabric. Then, measure
the length of the stitched design, adding the top and
bottom margin allowance. Cut a piece of fusible webbing
and a piece of quilt batting according to these measurements
Place
design wrong side out and stitched side down on your
ironing board. Be sure the seam is centered down the
back and stitched design is centered on the front with
an equal margin on each side. If for some reason, your
stitching is off-center, then make sure the stitching
is centered. It won't hurt if the seam down the back
isn't exactly centered
Apply
fusible webbing to the back of fabric (side with seam)
according to manufacturer's instructions. Be sure fusible
webbing is centered vertically so there is an equal
margin above and below stitched design area.
Peel
off the paper backing on fusible webbing once it cools.
Place quilt batting on top of fusible webbing and following
manufacturer's directions, fuse the batting to the webbing.
Turn
design right side and press flat, keeping design centered
horizontally.
Folding
toward the wrong side of fabric, turn under ¼"
on the top and bottom edges. Stitch in place. Top stitch
the top and bottom edges closed. Fold the top and bottom
edges of the fabric, approximately 1-3/4" toward
back of design. Hand stitch ends in place.
Braided
Edging and Tassels:
Open
and unfold each of 6 skeins of floss. Cut floss in lengths
of 48 inches (you will get 6 lengths per skein). Put
like colors together. Tie an overhand knot 4 inches
from one end. Tape knotted end of floss to a table or
counter. Separate floss into 3 color groups. Braid floss
until approximately 34 inches long. Tie an overhand
knot in end to hold braiding in place. You can adjust
the knot later if the length is too long.
Place
one knotted end of braid at bottom of one side of fabric.
Hand stitch braiding to side edge of fabric until you
reach the top of fabric. End hand stitching here.
Measure
approximately 16 inches of braiding from where you just
left off stitching. This will be the amount left unstitched
for a hanger. Leaving the 16 inches of braid loose,
line up braiding with 2nd side of fabric and hand stitch
braiding to side edge until you reach the bottom of
the fabric. End hand stitching here.
At
this point, adjust your overhand knot so it lines up
with the bottom of the fabric. Keeping threads even,
trim each tassel to 3 inches length. You may leave tassels
as is or if you would like to have a nice, fluffy tassel,
separate each of the 6 strands in all the floss ends.
Insert
bellpull into top and bottom casings. The ends of most
bellpulls remove so you can slip the rod through the
casing and then attach the ends again to secure.
Design
is now ready for displaying.
